1. Wave energy is an abundant resource but cost effective conversion into electricity has remained elusive. EPSRC is funding the project ' Step-WEC: STEP change for Wave Energy Conversion through floating multi-body multi-mode systems in swell' as part of the Supergen Marine Challenge 2: Marine Energy Technology for 2050. Applicants are sought with capability in wave and floating body hydrodynamics. The project is theoretical and experimental. Familiarity with WAMIT will be an advantage. Start date 1st April 2013. Duration 1 year in first instance on 3 year project. Ref. EPS-02003

2. This project is part of the NERC consortium iCOASST (integrated coastal sediment systems) and involves large-scale long-term coastal hydrodynamics modelling on the UK continental shelf driving morphodynamic change. The TELEMAC suite will be employed for this purpose. Start date 1st April 2013. Duration 2 years. Ref. EPS-02103

3. This project is part of the NERC consortium grant 'Will climate change in the Arctic increase the landslide-tsunami risk to the UK?'. This work package is concerned with tsunami overtopping, inundation and loading on coastal defences. In-house codes will be used for overtopping and TELEMAC for inundation. Start date 1st October 2013. Duration 18 months. Ref. EPS-02102

VIE proposal for the groundwater code ESTEL


Development of numerical methods in the groundwater flows and pollutant transfer code ESTEL within the open-source framework openTELEMAC-MASCARET

 - EDF R&D / LNHE and STFC Daresbury.

 

Context

The openTELEMAC-MASCARET system is an integrated suite of modules used to simulate free-surface flows involving flooding, wetting and drying as well as discharge of pollutants and release of freshwater. It also includes the 3D code ESTEL, which is a groundwater model for contaminant transfer in variably saturated flows. ESTEL has mainly been applied to study nuclear waste disposal safety assessments. Possible future applications of ESTEL deal with hydrogeological studies for safety assessment of industrial facilities, coupling surface and subsurface or watershed influence analysis. However, for this purpose, numerical developments in ESTEL are required, especially for large scale modeling with accurate precision.

The research domains of the Business Unit Water focus on water policy, surface and groundwater and modelling, urban water, sediment management, coastal zone management, water management systems and water related issues. Due to the increasing number of assignments, our Business Unit Water is seeking a engineer specialised in hydraulic modelling with TELEMAC

Your role:

  • You will be part of a multi-disciplinary team working in Antwerp on hydraulic modelling projects with Telemac – software.

Your profile:

  • University degree;
  • Your mother tongue is English or Dutch (or you are very fluent in one or more of these languages), you have the willingness to learn Dutch in a short period;
  • General knowledge of marine and coastal hydraulics is a must.
  • You have at least three years experience with numerical models, of which at least 2 years with TELEMAC.
  • A Ph.D. and/or peer reviewed publications in this field are an asset;
  • You have the ambition to grow further as an expert in numerical modeling, data processing and interpretation of measurements and model results and become an internal expert in your field;
  • You are technologically literate, an organizer and strive for quality and accuracy.
  • You are eager to demonstrate your skills in a competitive environment and convince the client of the added value of Antea Group;
  • You are willing to carry out a part of your work at a location other than our offices, either in Belgium (e.g. at the client's offices) or abroad (e.g. in the framework of an international project);

PhD post: Dynamics of the Amazonian mud bank system

Dynamics of the Amazonian mud bank system through spatial observation and hydro-sedimentary modeling: application to the coastal domain of French Guiana


Due to its geographical position near by the Amazon river estuary, French Guiana coastal domain is permanently under the influence of huge mud inputs from this river forming important mud bank structures migrating along the coastline. The migration of these mud banks continuously modulates the geomorphology of this coastal area characterized by an alternance of erosion and accretion zones. The understanding of the processes driving the migration of the mud banks represents a crucial issue at regional scale for various field of application (e.g. ecology, coastal management...). Recent studies have demonstrated the interest of using the information delivered by ocean color observation (MERIS, MODIS, SeaWIFs) for describing synoptically the Amazonian mud banks system. Despite their obvious interest, the latter medium spatial resolution data are however not fine enough for allowing a precise description of the hydro-sedimentary processes involved in this original geomorphological system.

This PhD was built in the latter context and will aim at providing a better understanding of the Guianese mud banks system through the development of innovative approaches coupling medium and high spatial resolution remote sensing observation and hydro-sedimentary modeling.

Specifically, a first of the PhD will consist in developing remote sensing observation of suspended sediment concentration in the coastal waters of French Guiana using medium (e.g. MERIS) and high resolution sensors (Landsat-8). This activity will need the development of inversion algorithms adapted to the high turbidity of this coastal domain and will provide innovative data especially regarding the high resolution sensors.

Further, a second part of the PhD activity will consist in the adaptation of a hydro-sedimentary model (TELEMAC) to the investigated region based on the in situ and satellite data gathered in the frame of the PhD that will complement existing data in the area.

In practice this PhD will be held at the CNRS-Guyane (Cayenne) and will couple in situ and programming activities that will benefit from the facilities already available in the laboratory.
