Hi everyone,

Can we define a 2D culvert? I have a river thalweg which need to be covered. Under normal discharge it is simple river thalweg and when discharge is high it acts a culvert and pressure flow occur. How can I define this. Can someone suggest?

Thanks in advance
Sandip

Hello,

Have you read the TELEMAC-2D user manual?
In addition, you can also read the TELEMAC-3D theory guide to have a full explanation of what is implemented in TELEMAC.
You can also have a look at the TELEMAC-2D examples called siphon and bridge + the description of these examples in the TELEMAC-2D validation document.

Hope this helps,

Chi-Tuan

Hello Chi-Tuan,

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I have read the manual both Telemac2d and 3D. In manual and examples for culvert it explains only 1D culvert (to my understanding). I was wondering if 2D culverts with cover height are also possible or not.

best regards

Hello Sandip,

I am not a specialist of this feature, I am not able to tell more than what is written in the manuals.

Anyway, I am not sure to understand what you mean by "with cover height". Can you describe more, provide a figure? Is it different from variables HAUT1 or HAUT2 in the CULVERTS DATA FILE?

If I were you and want to use culvert feature with TELEMAC-2D, I would try to find the closest configuration of culvert described in the TELEMAC-3D theory guide (in p. 45, 49 or 52) and see if it can fit what you want to model.

Hope this helps,

Chi-Tuan

Hello Chi-Tuan,

I am not allowed to upload original picture and original mesh. But I have uploaded two pictures to explain my culvert. In the mesh the circled area is where my original culvert exist. Above this culvert exist the crossing bridge as in other picture( picture is taken from www.ayresassociates.com/taking-notice-is...bridge-or-a-culvert/).

When discharge is normal (e.g 5 m3/s) the water flow through culvert partially full(not pressure flow).
When discharge is full (e.g 25 m3/s) the water flows through the culvert full (submerged case of Telemac3D theory guide).

My question is can we define culvert (like this) in Telemac where the culvert height has a role to create pressure flow. Interesting part will be when flow through the culvert is full, will the water level above the culvert will increase?
I hope I have explained my situation.
Can you please help?

Kind regards
Sandip

Hello Sandip,

Sorry for the delay, I was busy the last weeks.

Looking at the TELEMAC-2D validation manual and in particular the "bridge" example, it looks like what you want to model. I would answer yes to your questions.

Hope this helps,

Chi-Tuan

Hi,

Please read the (rather large) documentation specific to culverts (user and reference manuals) in order to understand how those are dealt with in TELEMAC. It is a point-to-point calculation based on culverts characterisitcs plus water levels up- and downstream. No water surface profile is computed along the culvert.

Kind regards
