I am running with rainfall and evaporation. Initially I have been using rainfall as the net of rain+evaporation.

However where there is only evaporation (-ve numbers) the system throws an error, related to signa grid inconsistencies. It appears to happen at dry or nearly dry elements. Wetting and drying is activated.

Looking through the associated code there does not appear to any checks on dry cells (or the volume in the cell) against the source terms!

Should the code take adjust of source terms that extract water to ensure that the the volume doesnot go negative. If evaporation is calculated (rather than set) there also does not seem to be a check that the water volume is available. As these terms are effectively applied explicitly - evaporation should be turned off in very shallow cells.

For now I have ensured that evaporation total net rainfall is always >0.

This is all true. I have corrected a number of related issues in the trunk. Now in the trunk if you use:

TREATMENT OF NEGATIVE DEPTHS : 2

In this case the evaporation will be treated at the end of all terms in the continuity equation, and it will be limited to avoid negative depths. This limitation is then taken into account in the mass balance, so the mass conservation is still correct.
