Hi everyone,
Here in Quebec we have very cold winters and ice cover needs to be taken into account when modeling our reservoirs on a annual cycle basis. I just can't seem to find the info anywhere if TELEMAC-3D has the capability of modeling ice cover and snow depths (and the processes affected by them, i.e. light penetration, water temperature, etc.) if we setup a 3D model of our reservoirs? so I'm guessing it's not possible at the moment, but I was wondering if anyone else has the same needs and has tried to do something with TELEMAC 3D before?
Any feedback appreciated.
Thanks

Hello,

We (HR Wallingford) and EDF are currently working with Clarkson University (USA) to develop and implement a comprehensive ice dynamic module in TELEMAC-2D. The work should be completed in the spring of 2018.

The goal is to also be in a position to apply / extend this work in 3D but I cannot guarantee this yet. Anyhow, there are probably several processes that could be used in 3D with only a few twicks, such as freeze-up / melting / surface heat budget / snow precipitation, which do not involve ice dynamic ...

So - watch this space for the time being - Please note that we are open to external participation / finance that could further accelerate those developments.

Hope this helps,

Sébastien.

Hello

To clarify Sébastien post, waiting for the upcoming new features dealing with ice dynamics, you have several options already integrated in telemac-2D and Telemac-3D. These features can be activated using the new water quality module called Waqtel which is used through an internal coupling with both hydrodynamics modules.
Besides some biological and geochemical processes, Waqtel handles heat exhange with atmosphere which could be the most important for you at this stage.

with my kind regards

Riadh

Hello!

Riadh, do this model include effects of ice cover on the velocity profiles?
