Hello

Reading some post in this forum, it seems impossible to run telemac with windows 64. I wanted to buy a workstation with a lot of memory, (24Go DDR3). Is someone confirm that it is useless to buy such a computer ?

best regards

Hi

Two different remark to your post.

Telemac could run on windows 64 even the precompiled version is a 32 bit.

It's possible to compile Telemac in a 64 bit mode (we've made it) but ...

We found a problem with the parallel version !!! The scalar version run well!

We've found some bug in some particular function of MPICH2 which are not compatible with the 64 bit memory management.

But the next version (6.1) should be fully compatible and the parallel version should be available in 64 bits

Christophe

hi

Thank you for your answer. Do you know when the next version will be avaiable?

I wanted to buy a computer with a lot of memory, but the 32 bit computer should not have a memory bigger than 3GO. If I buy a computer with a memory of 8GO (in 64 bit), will telemac run using all the memory or will it only use the 3GO of the 32bit version ??

thank you very much

Hi

The next version will be available this summer (no precise date for the moment but probably at the end of July).

If you run the 32 bit version of telemac, you can't have an access to more than 3 Go of memory (The memory is controlled by the integer and the size of the integer in 32 bit cannot allow you to use a memory address that exceed this size).

Hi

Thanks for your answer ! Do you know where you can find the 64-bit version of Telemac ? even if the parallel mode doesn't work it permiss to earn a lot of time

Hi
The Windows 64 bit version is not available on the website.
I've made it for tests and as we detect the parallel problem, I decided to not publish it.

But you can do this version yourself starting from the sources and just tunning the systel.ini file in order to make a 64 bit version.
There are few things to change (One link option (/X86) and the MPI path (LIP_MPI)
You should also change the MPI path in the parallel makefile (There is an include)
And last, you should compile metis in 64 bits to generate a libmetis file compatible with the 64 bit

thank you very much !

Actually I have a problem with the time of my simulation under telemac2d.it takes 2 days to run and as I said before I have a possibility to buy a computer. Do you think the problem comes from the RAM or from the processor ? I work with an intel XEON W3540 2.93GHz and 3.49 Go for the RAM.Is there something to improve ?

thank you for your help !

Hi
I'm not sure that extend memory will change your computation time. Telemac-2D is not really memory consuming. You could check the memory use when a simulation is running.
The processor is important but also the bus between processor and memory
Check your processor is full loaded when a simulation run.

After that, the solution to decrease computation time, is to well configure your simulation (some options could have an influence) or use the parallelism (if possible)

hi

the processor is only loaded at 13% !! when I launch it in paralell it is about 26%. is telemac only work on one core by processor ? (I have 2 quadri-core processors)

thanks a lot

Hi
When your run in parallel, did you parameter the computation for 8 processors or only 2?

The parallelism in Telemac is made by domain decomposition so each sub-domain run is own program. We don't use threads so the program use only one core of your 8 core in scalar mode.
