TOPIC: Importing bathymetry data

Importing bathymetry data 6 years 5 months ago #30642

I have bathymetry data in .ascii format. I have successfully imported it into BlueKenue using File>Import>ArcINFO Grid. However when I try to use newInterpolator2D and move the bathymetry data into it, I get an error message (see attachment 1 '2D_interpolator_error').

I was wondering whether I need to convert the bathymetry data into another format? In the BlueKenue Workspace, the data seems to be in a tabular format (see attachment 2 'Bathymetry_print_screen'). I believe the bathymetry should be in a different format (see attachment 3 'Bathymetry_correct_format').

Can anyone help me and advise how to convert my bathymetry into the correct format so that the Interpolator2D will work?

Many thanks.

Hello

just copy data to .xyz format and then 2DInterpolator will accept them.

kind regards

Hi Riadh,

Many thanks for your reply. I have tried converting it to an .xyz file and opening it in BlueKenue, however it doesn't seem to have worked. The bathymetry plot of the data when imported as an .ascii file can be seen in attachment 1 (Bathymetry plot). However when I convert it to an .xyz file and plot the bathymetry, it looks like attachment 2 (xyz bathymetry).

The first few lines of the data look like attachment 3 (bathymetry data) and I wondered whether I need to change this?

Can you offer any further advice?

Kind regards,
Rob

Hi

Preliminary remark, as the raw data is already gridded, did you try to map directly those data on your mesh without using interpolator2D?

Otherwise, I think you should open the grid data, save as xyz file.
Open the xyz and put the data into the interpolator2D

Regards

PS for Riadh as the file is a grid ascii file there is no X and Y values. And remove the -9999.0 value you will break the grid structure...

Hello Rob

I see that there is several values with no data (value -9999). I guess you can edit the ascii file and remove theses points and keep only 3 cloums with w y and Z

kind regards

Riadh

Hello Rob,

I have a script that will take an ESRI *.asc grid file, and convert it to an comma separated xyz file. The no data values are not converted. You should be able to import this into whatever you like. See script asc2csv.py in PPUTILS.

Please give me a copy of "bathymetry data in .ascii format" and then I can debug Blue Kenue to see what is happening internally.

Thanks,
Alan

Hi Alan,

Hopefully I have a attached the bathymetry data file successfully - it is quite large (750MB).

Rob

I think that is too large for this system. Can you add it to drop box or some other file sharing system and email me directly to download it?

Hi all,

Use "Tools->Map Object" to map the bathymetry data from the ASC file to your mesh.

The interpolator only accepts pointSets, and 2D and 3D lineSets as source data.

You can save the ASC file to a xyz file in BlueKenue. See "File-Save Copy As...".
