Dear Blue Kenue Community,
It has recently come to my attention that saving and loading work spaces in Blue Kenue may need some love. If you love Blue Kenue and want to show it then please let me know.
Reply to this post (or send me a private message) to let me know that you wish to help me improve Blue Kenue workspace saving and loading.
Testing Goals/Methodology:
There are about 50 (or so) files that Blue Kenue can import and/or export. So, in order to get workspace loading and saving working properly I (we) would likely need to do something like:
- Pick one of the 50 data files that are of interest for you. Ideally, the data should be shared so that we may use it forever more. There are some files already on CHyMS and so I'd like to organize things so that it is easier for everyone to both find the data and use it for testing and/or learning purposes.
- Once you have decided which data file is important for you to test then we can create a ticket on CHyMS so that you would become the "owner" of the data file (for the purposes of testing the workspace saving+loading). If you only want to test and don't want to be an "owner"... that's ok too. All help is welcome!
- Then you would (1) load the data file (2) pick a view to use (3) display the data object in the selected view (4) set some display properties (5) possibly set or change some metadata, titles, etc (6) save the work space (7) load the work space and then (8) confirm that the work space and data object properties are as expected
All of the above needs to be done for as many combinations of things that are important for you (and other people) using Blue Kenue with respect to each data file and workspace saving+loading.
Possible future work:
After each individual data file is confirmed to be saveable and loadable via the workspace file then we would need to start combining data files. In other words, load more than one data file, display them in one or more views and save the workspace file and then load it again... checking that what is loaded is the same as what was saved.
Where will test results will be stored?
It will be easiest (and most transparent for everyone) if we create 1 ticket for 1 data file in the CHyMS Blue Kenue Community and then keep track of everything there. i.e. you add a file with what you've found or you comment on the ticket and say yah/nay.
Each test will be for a specific version of Blue Kenue. So as new versions of Blue Kenue come out then we would need to check that the workspace saving+loading still works properly.
As a side note, CHyMS provides the capability to vote on tickets, so if the Blue Kenue Community wishes, then they can vote on important data files and I can focus my fixing efforts on those high voted tickets first and delay the tickets with fewer votes to later.
When will things get fixed?
If there are not too many things found during testing then I would hope to address them soon-ish. I can't promise exact dates but I can promise to put as much effort as I can on this aspect of Blue Kenue.
What if I think there is something more important than workspace saving+loading?
Please let me know!
And to let you know... the Blue Kenue Community (on CHyMS) currently has a list of about 11 things and the internal tracking project on CHyMS currently has about 310 things to do. And I have the impression that, with your testing help, we might be able to get the main drawbacks of workspace saving+loading sorted out!
Looking forward to all volunteers that sign up for workspace saving+loading testing! Hopefully in the next 4 weeks, but any and all volunteers are very much appreciated at any time.
Very kindly,
Alan
