Hi!

I use shapefiles to define my meshes. I noticed that if I modify a shapefile by deleting a vertex, the new saved version of the same file cannot then be imported in BK (error message).

Is it a known bug? Can it be fixed in a next release?

Thanks in advance!
Regards

Hello,

I think you should save the imported shapefile in a BlueKenue format, e.g. *.i2s or *.i3s file. Then you should be able to modify and to save it.

Hope this helps.
best regards,
Clemens

Hi Clemens,

Thanks for your advice, but the problem occur during the importing process. The file is not opened by BK. The modifications I mentioned are done in ArcGIS prior to import to BK.

Hi PL,

What is the error message?
Can you post the shapefile here so we can investigate?
I need more info if I'm to fix the problem.

Hi Martin!

I attach a zip with:
- Outline_original.shp
- Outline_original_1_vertex_deleted.shp

The 2nd shapefile is a copy of the first one in which I deleted one vertex.
The first file is imported normaly.
The 2nd file cannot be imported, see the error message:
Reading DBF file...
   Found data for 1 features.
Found 1 Attribute(s) for each feature.
      Name: Id, type:integer
Loading geometry for 1 ARC_POLYGON features.
ERROR while reading ARC_POLYGON
ERROR: while loading:
    C:\TEMP\shp_BK_forum\Outline_original_1_vertex_deleted.shp

I don't really know what is done with ARC_POLYGON...

I hope you can figure out what's happening. This problem is a bit annoying since the only possibility to correct it is to create a new shapefile and draw a new feature without deleting any vertices.

Thanks in advance!
Regards

PL

Hi PL,

I'm not sure what is going on with this shapefile.
I am not back in the office until Sept so I don't have
access to the EnSim source code to figure this out.

One option would be to use the Blue Kenue line/vertex edit
features saving the outline as an EnSim native i2s file.

Hi Martin,

It's not a hot topic, so September would be fine!
Regarding the problem, can it be that the shapefile keeps information of all nodes, ..., that have been created as metadata, even those who have been deleted and that BK does not recognize?

I just add that the problem has appeared with all shapefiles in which I deleted one or more vertices before importing into BK. I use ArcGIS 9.3.

Thanks a lot in advance,
Good summer!

Hi Martin!

Is there a chance that you have some time looking back at this shapefile problem?

Thank you very much in advance!

Hi again,

I had a quick look and it appears that ArcGIS appends a garbage record at the end of the shapefile after deleting the vertex!
My shapefile reader assumes that all records are well formatted and the contents are well defined. Sigh...
Anyway, I've modified my reader code to account for this nonsense data. Unfortunately, I'm not in a position to release a new Blue Kenue version at the moment.

So... it will be fixed in the next version. (release probably sometime before Christmas.)
