The dxf file format is a moving target so we gave up on it years ago. However, there are a number of free tools that you can use to convert dxf to shp file (gdal for instance)

There is a very simple and useful freeware tool (for windows) called DXF2XYZ that I used for that purpose. However, it did required some post-processing and I now use the mapexport command of AutoCAD Civil3D and convert my contours into ARCInfo shape files (.shp) and import them directly into Blue Kenue. Unfortunatelly, this command in not available in the 'plain' AutoCAD version.

another very good solution is the open source GIS software QGIS which supports also the output of 3D shape files.
For batch processing the GDAL utilities, more precisely the "ogr2ogr" utility works well and with a lot of options.
