Hi all,

I'm generating a new mesh using only channel mesh. I'm wondering what is the best way to generate an island using the channel mesher. I know that for T3 mesh, we can use hardline or softline; but with channel mesh these options are not possible.

with my best regards

Hi Riadh

As I know, there is no possibilities to do that automatically.

2 options exists:
  • split the channel mesh in 2 parts (before and after the island). include the channel mesh in a T3 mesh in order to mesh the island zone
  • from your channel mesh, you remove the island area, extract the outline of this area and mesh this area with a T3 mesh

Both solutions works. Each one has its advantages and inconvenient...

Hope this helps

Hello Christophe

Thanks for these hints. The problem that in both cases, we loose the elongated elements in the island's area.
Ideally, we need to introduce softlines in channel mesh (Martin is it in your todo list? B) )

Hi Riadh,

This option is not on the TODO list.
I'd have to think about this for a bit.

The current channel mesher is simple in that it always has a constant number of nodes across the channel. How would you see that resolved?

Could you come up with a picture (GIS coverage) of your situation and a sketch of how a reasonable mesh might look?

I've had another meshing strategy percolating in the back of my mind for years now that might address this situation. I'll need some incentive to move it forward. :-)

Cheers... Martin

Hello Martin

sorry for this very late reply. I hope that new channel mesh strategy is always fresh in your mind :cheer:

here attached you can find an example of island within the channel mesh.
I will be happy to beta-test your new developments (if ready

).

Hi Riadh,

I've retired so it's not clear whether this development will ever see
the light of day. (It depends on how bored I get next winter).

What mesher/technique did you use to generate the mesh in your example?

Cheers... Martin

Hello Martin

I hope that you are well retired but in the same time I hope that you will keep the flame alive to keep going Blue Kenue. Is there a new relief team at CHC?
We are using a home tool extracted from the old legacy of Matisse.
kind regards

Hi Riadh,

Indeed, the EnSim/Kenue work is continuing at NRC. Alan Barton has taken over responsibility for software development. There was also some discussion of participation at the User Club meeting this fall but I'm not sure where that stands.

In the meantime, I plan to check in here from time to time to lend a hand.

Cheers... Martin
