Hello,

maybe that is a quite simple issue. But for me, being beginner in BlueKenue, it is a problem.

I receive a Selafin file with the file extension *.sel from a concern, which was generated by the pre-processor ‘janet’. They are using this file with telemac v6p0. So far I am only familiar with *.slf files, which I can import and export with BlueKenue and I can use this with telemac.

So my questions are:
1. What is the difference between those file extensions?
2. How can I import the *.sel file in BlueKenue?
Trying to import the *.sel file in BlueKenue results in following error message:
'While reading node X values
ERROR: Unknown or Invalid file format
While reading 2D Mesh Geometry
ERROR: Unknown or Invalid file format'

Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Katja

Hi Katja,

Is it possible that this is a "double precision" selafin file?
If so, Blue Kenue doesn't support this format yet.

Hello Martin,
thank you very much for your answer.
Yes it is a double precision selafin file (Real*8) with the endianness ‘big’. Do you know a solution for this problem? Is it possible to convert the *.sel file to *.slf? Or is it better to ask for another format? But which format is the right one?
Cheers,
Katja

Hi Katja,

The REAL solution is for NRC to add double precision SELAFIN
file support to Blue Kenue. In the mean time, I'm not aware
of the existence of a converter.

There is no "right format". The traditional SELAFIN file format uses
single precision but you can run into coordinate rounding problems
especially in cases where you are positioning nodes with sub-meter
accuracy in projected coordinate systems like UTM, Polar Stereo, etc.
hence the introduction of the double precision format.

If you have the choice then as a simple fix, get Janet to produce a
single-precision file.

Cheers... Martin

BTW: There is no "official" extension for SELAFIN files. People
.sel, .slf, .tel and others interchangeably. There is no special
significance associated with any of these.

Hello,

you can switch between a double precision SELAFIN and a single precision SELAFIN (whether *.sel of *.slf) using the python, by typing:
runSELAFIN.py alter --float inputfilename outfile.slf

Hope this helps,
Sébastien.
