I'm trying to run a case with T2d (later to be coupled to Tom) of a Gulf.
I already successfully simulated just the tidal currents by using TPXO database.
But the tidal currents actually do not include the ocean-circulation velocities that occur in the area.
I actually get these additional current values from a large-scale model of the Mediterranean Sea, but imposing as BC (544 or 566) tidal elevations and all the currents (tide+circulation) gave me bad results, both in terms of magnitude and of spurious oscillations.
I'm wondering if there is a way to add to the TPXO database velocities the additional currents.

Hello,

You have an over constrained boundary (where you wish to impose both levels and velocities). Try investigating the Thompson boundary -- it should work nicely in 2D.

Note that, ideally, you should use TELEMAC-3D if you wish to simulate density-driven flows within the domain.

I'm just wondering if I could insert additional prescribed currents to tidal conditions (read from TPXO db).
I couldn't run TEL 3D for such a large domain and I need to impose circulation currents to tides.

Any suggestions?

Hello,

The currents in TPXO are not ocean currents but rather 2D depth average tide transport values.

You need to extract those other currents from a model such as HYCOM or another.

Yes you can impose both levels and current using the Thompson boundary conditions.

I actually imposed 544 at the open sea boundary, Thompson BC, TPXO model as tidal conditions, and additional currents at the same boundary, coming from an other Mediterranean circulation model.
The domain is quite large, let say 100x100 km.
You will find attached the steering file and the fortran file I modified to read the current data.

Can you pls tell me how to give initial condition for tide driven circulation, am asking this, as you said you have successfully implemented tidal simulation using tpxo. My case is am simulating tidal current for a gulf in India using tpxo and 566 condition but my problem is am getting tidal forcing only once at the start after that am not able to see any tide from the boundary so my velocity is becoming very low after the first tide. I dont know what mistake am making, I need suggestions in this regard

How we make sure that tidal conditions are applied to the boundary? Is there anything I should do to apply the tidal constituents to the open boundary?
