Every time I install a software that has an mpi library bundled, it ends up in a mess as the software installed last, usually puts its folders at the beginning of the PATH variable and hijacks the old. Specifying the full path of mpiexec at the systel should solve half of the problem. The other half is making sure the corresponding smpd service is started at the client PC.

To check that the smpd service is linked to the "right" mpi? If yes how can I do that?

Each mpi library comes with its own set of mpiexec executable and smpd service . You have to make sure that the running smpd service is the one you want. One way to check that is by looking the "path to executable" of the smpd service (Administrative Tools\Services console).

There are commands to query the smpd service for its version (will also tell you if it is Intel or MPICH2, etc.), but I don't recall them. I have moved on to MS-MPI, which now works in a different way than the original MPICH2.
