Hi all,

I'm having some problems with the creation of the Free Surface Files for obtaining the results with Free Surface Animation.

The simulation ended up correctly, but the issue came out when creating the Free Surface File. I tried looking in the forum but seems to me that nobody had this problem.

CAS, CONLIM and SELAFIN file attached and also the error that came out at the end of the simulation.

Does anyone know how to overcome the issue?

Thanks a lot for the attention

Andrea

I can't attach the selafin file (too big) but I don't think that the problem is due to that since the simulation run successfully without activating the Free Surface Animation

Hi,

Is there someone who can help me with this problem ?

Dear Dottarelli,

Did you check your listing and results files? Can you open your .slf with your favorite viewer and check that there is no NaN or spurious results?

Best regards,

Hi Jacques

First of all thanks for the attention.

I opened the results file with Bluekenue and it did not show any problem, but when I try to load the AMP_n_PHASE result file it came up with error (see figure attached 'error_Bluekenue') and the same for the free surface result file ('error_Bluekenue_2').

Despite the error message the AMP_n_PHASE res file shows his variable (wave height and wave phase), but the Free surface file does not.

I attach also a pic of the WAVE HEIGHT results, I know that is not enough to judge but the result file is too big. If you could help me I will share the selafin and the other files in a different way.

Thanks agains and best wishes

Hi all,

waiting for some help I made some test with the EXAMPLE CASE bj78 (''art_bj78_animated.cas'').

The fact is that the example run without any problem, it computes the free surface animation and doesn't show any error message.

The problem occur when I change something in the steering file, I tried:

1) Imposing Monochromatic wave, with the same wave height of the original example case and setting:

MONODIRECTIONAL RANDOM WAVE : NO
WAVE PERIOD =1.887 (same as peak period ofthe example)

2) Imposing a Monodirectional random wave with:

PEAK PERIOD : 2
MINIMUM SPECTRAL PERIOD : 1.99 /previous 0.75
MAXIMUM SPECTRAL PERIOD : 2.01 /previous 8.0
NUMBER OF PERIODS : 1

In the first case (Monochromatic wave) it comes up with the same error (attached). In the second case it correcty reach the end of run and it generates the results file without any error.

So my questions are:

1) Is possible that ARTEMIS does not generate the Free Surface Animation file in the case of a Monochromatic Wave??

2) Do you think that it could be possible to overcome the issue by setting a monodirectional random wave with the peak period equal to the Monochromatic wave period and setting the number of period =1 ??

Thanks in advance for the help,

Cheers

Hi Andrea

I would suggest that it all stems from the fact that the time stamp in the amplitude and phase file was not output correctly (see your BK error message). Hence the rest of the process falling over...

Please note that for a regular wave run, there is no need for the amplitude and phase file since the variables are already a standard output of the model. It is, therefore, possible that the animation script was not tested with a regular wave result.

You could use the variables from your output file directly but will need to do quite a bit of editing (rename them to be 'WAVE HEIGHT D01' and 'WAVE PHASE D01' and change the value of time 0) and then use the post-process script on this file. This seems quite cumbersome.

Alternatively, I think that running a random monodirectional wave with just one period, as you alluded, could do the trick for the purpose of generating an animation. But you need to make sure that the period actually selected for the run is what you want (based on equal energy bins and a JONSWAP, i.e. not just that in the steering file).

Hope that answers your questions

Hi Noémie,

First of all thanks for the attention and the reply.

Surely you answer my question, but I would ask how should I proceed for set a random waves that present the same energy as a monochromatic wave (I mean, is it just something to do with theory or there something more that I should consider?).

I would have another question also.

When setting the AUTOMATIC TETAP CALCULATION = YES, from which value of TETAP does ARTEMIS start the iteration ? Does it start from the value that is in the CONLIM file or ARTEMIS computes it by his own ?

What I would know is if I should set the approximate value of TETAP in the CONLIM file even if AUTOMATIC TETAP CALCULATION = YES, because if ARTEMIS starts from the value given in the CONLIM then the iterations needed to converge probably could be less, but if ARTEMIS computes it by his own then no matter what value of TETAP is given in the CONLIM file.

Sorry for the long reply and many thanks for the attention.

Kind regards,

Andrea

Hi Andrea

From what I can see in the code, the TETAP read in the conlim file is the value used as a first guess in the AUTO TETAP calcs. So it does start from your best estimate...

I seem to remember there are quite a few printouts in the sortie file, so you could check that's actually the case.

Should have said that was based on V8P1R1
But I don't think the code will have changed since if you're using V8P2R0
