Hello,

we want to simulate a dam break scenario of an embankment dam for an ICOLD (International Commission On Large Dams) benchmark workshop with Telemac-2D.
It is left to the participant how to deal with the breach process itself.
So in my opinion we have some different possibilities for determining the outflow hydrograph from the reservoir:
- use a third party dam break software which computes physically based the breach process and the hydrograph according to geomechanical parameters of the dam
- use an empirical formula from literature, e.g. Froehlich, 2008, Embankment Dam Breach Parameters and Their Uncertainties, ASCE,JHE
- physically based using Sisyphe by providing an initial breach

Does anyone have experiences with such tasks and could give us some hints what are suitable approaches?
Enclosed in the pdf the details. So we think also about to implement empirical formulas, like Froehlich, into Telemac-2D for an automated processing procedure.

I would be vary glad for any advice.

Best regards,
Clemens

Hi Clemens

Very interessant idea!

Just in case:
In telemac, since v6.2, you have the possibility to simulate breaches by a bottom evolution. The first version allow you to just manage the opening by a lowering of bottom but it could be a basis for a new version! Have a look in the releases notes of 6.2 and on the test case.

For your information, if you don't see it already, in Journal of Hydraulic Engineering Volume: 139, Number: 6 (June 2013), there is an article dealing with this subject:
Depth-Averaged Hydrodynamic Model for Gradual Breaching of Embankment Dams Attributable to Overtopping Considering Suspended Sediment Transport

Hello Christophe,

thank you for the answer.
I tried the breach case and it is very interesting and cool!

We decided to try some different approaches for the benchmark workshop.

Best regards,
Clemens

I am interested in using the breach function as well, but could not find the breach example. I could only see v6.1 validation models on the download site. Could you please advise where the validation model for the breach function is located?

PS: I am very excited about this new feature as I used to program this function in Fortran. I appreciate all the effort that goes into maintaining and improving Telemac!

thank you,
Derek

Hi Derek

You should normally find all the validation test case of the V6P2 on the svn!
The address you have to enter in your SVN client should be :
svn.opentelemac.org/svn/opentelemac/validation/

let me know if it's work. If not I could send you the test case directly

Thanks for this note.
Saddly, I am not an SVN user as it doesn't seem to work well with my company's firewall. I will try to download it from home.
