Hello,

I would like to simulate an oil spill from a sunken tanker using Telemac2D. Should I simulate the oil as a floating tracer? In case of it is possible, how can I implement floating dams to confine oil but leave the water flow beneath?

Hi Aissa

If you wait for the next version, you will dispose of a new module dedicated to the oil spill simulation in telemac (2D and 3D).
But i didn't know if the floating dams are implemented or not.

As I know, the date is not formerly fixed but probably like last year. The developements had been stop at the end of june to deliver a consolidated version (with all tests case checked) at the beginning of september.
As some automatic validation are know available, maybe the delivery will arrive sooner...

If you can wait for the next release, you will be able to simulate oil spill properly using the new features (advection, diffusion, evaporation, dissolution, beaching and releasing...etc.)
However, I'm not sure that you can simulate the scenario you've described in your post using Telemac2D.

In deed the Oil module is already in the new release V6P3 and it works in scalar and parallel.

An oil spill model is now available on Telemac 2D. I send to you the provisional user guide of the model by E-mail. In complement of the model, you will find two oil spill test cases (RIV_ART & ESTU_GIR) in the examples of Telemac 2D.

A tri-dimensional version must be available in the next Telemac version in 2014.

These are great news. I was working on the behaviour of oil spill in the Lagos/Lekki lagoon (Nigeria) and I was wondering how to model it (hydrodynamic is ready) and how to implement floating dams.
The OpenTELEMAC team answered to first question, thank you (@Cédric, it would be kind if I can get a copy of the "provisional" UG),
Concerning the second question, I still don't know if it is feasible

I can send you the User Guide if you give me your E-mail Address. In fact, the pdf file cannot be added on the forum because it is too large. Concerning your second question, the floating dams are not take into account in the oil spill. However, I think that is possible to implement it based on the current model: the oil particle must be stopped when they arrive on the floating dam.
