for HC it's a variable in SUBROUTINE FRICTION_CALC :

TYPE(BIEF_OBJ), INTENT(IN) :: CHESTR,DW_MESH,HC,VRES

so can i use HC and HN depend on the Subroutine to indicate the water depth ??

HC and HN are local names of arguments in this case. In the rest of the program only HN exists and is really declared in the DECLARATIONS_TELEMAC2D.
