Dear all,

I would like to simulate the turbidity current in the reservoir with TELEMAC-3D coupled with Gaia.
However, I found that the plunging phenomenon could not occur.
After many efforts, I still cannot solve the problems.
Therefore, I hope there are some professional user can help me to point out my misunderstanding.

The upstream and downstream boundaries are provided by the physical model.
The sediment type, diameter, setting velocity, critical shear stress for deposition and erosion and bed roughness are considered as the critical parameters.
The set parameters are shown in the attached steering file.
I would like to ask for help with checking whether I miss any keyword or put the wrong value?

I simulate the cohesive sediment in my research.
I found that the change of suspension transport formula for all sand is not working.
According to the guideline, it said the suspension transport formula is for non-cohesive sediment.
Therefore, if I simulate in cohesive sediment, the suspension transport formula is not necessary.
I would like to check my understanding is correct or not.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Your positive feedback will be encouraging towards my consistent efforts in this research field.

Best Regards
Chen

Hello Chen,

Sorry for the delay, with 2 colleagues of mine, we had to check if we still could reproduce a similar case we ran with SEDI-3D a few years ago, with GAIA and time is lacking.

Please find enclosed the 2 steering files we have used, we could have seen the plunging point.

FYI, we aim to add this case to the GAIA validation examples if we have time.

Hope this helps,

Sara, Magali and Chi-Tuan

Dear Sara, Magali and Chi-Tuan,

Thanks so much for your help.
It helps me a lot to understand that the turbidity current could be simulated with Gaia.
After revising my steering file, I still have some questions:
1. Which parameter is the critical term for the plunging point?
2. Is the "density law" important to the turbidity current simulation?
3. I found that there is no sediment diameter in the example file, maybe it has been set in the "restart_canalturbi_new.slf"?
4. If it is available, could you share the file, including steering file, mesh, subroutain...etc? I would like to run the example and find out the key points.

Again, millions thanks for the kind reply and support.

Hello Chen,

To quickly answer you:
- the critical term for the plunging point is the density terms,
- the restart file does not contain any sediment diameter,
- the test case is not ready yet, but you alread have 2 steering files. The geometry file is a channel with a slope and the user subroutine only contains the distribution of planes over the vertical (USER_MESH_TRANSF).

Hope this helps,

Chi-Tuan

Dear Chi-Tuan,
Thanks so much for your kind reply.
Your support helps me a lot.
I will keep doing the sensitivity analysis and hope that good results could be obtained.
Also, I hope that the test case could be finished and add to the GAIA validation examples.

Best regards
Chen
