Hey everyone!

Let's assume I have mapped a D50 and clay content ratio (clayMass/totalMass) maps to my geometry file with certain names and then use them as private variables so that I can make them read by user_bed_init.f.

1. Since I have different D50 values for each node, does that mean that I need to have NPOIN number of classes?

1.a If yes, then does that mean that I also need to supply NPOIN number of fractions with RATIO_INIT?

1.b Or can I use two classes (mud and sand), and then map 2 different spatially varying D50 (let's say D50_1 and D50_2) dataset to my geometry file? So that I still have 2 classes in each node, but their mass ratio and D50_1 and D50_2 will differ in each node.

I feel like I am confused about these classes. Thanks for your time!

Hi Arda,

The way to create spatially variable grain sizes is:
  1. Choose a limited number of classes of different sediments you want to model (keep it as low as you can get away with, and I suggest nom more than 10). For example 1 mud, 1 silt 2 sand, 1 gravel (total 5).
  2. For those sediment classes define the d50 (for example 0.000003;0.00002;0.0001;0.0005;0.002)
  3. For each sediment class create a map that shows how much of that sediment class is present of in the bed (For example 0.2;0.2;0.2;0.2;0.2 for fully mixed or 1;0;0;0;0;0 for mud)
