I am simulating an experimental flume with bed load transport. To simulate the same I have been coupling the Telemac 3D with GAIA. I have been using the default finite element analysis for Exner equation in GAIA. However, the results of the bed evolution shows some oscillation and sharp peaks. As some papers have suggested that the Finite Volume approach in GAIA can help solve the issues of these oscillations.

I was wonderig if it is possible and correct to use Finite Volume approch for Exner equation while coupling it with Telemac 3D. As Telemac 3D is soley Finite Element module, will such coupling be possible?

Hello Ravi,

I am not a sediment transport nor a GAIA specialist, but I would say that FINITE VOLUMES in GAIA (to solve Exner equation) can be activated when using finite elements in TELEMAC-2D (as done in a few GAIA examples like bosse-t2d, guenter, yen and hippodrome-t2d).
In the same way, I do not see why it could not be used with TELEMAC-3D to solve Exner equation but I am not a specialist as already told and have never tried with TELEMAC-3D.
My advice would be to try it.

Hope this helps,

Chi-Tuan
