Hello,
I have created a coarse mesh of Lake Michigan to try wind generated waves (stationary winds, ux=4, uv=3)
I have tried different combinations of parameters in the steering file based on the manual and some forum posts here.
However I cannot get wind generated waves with meaningful heights. It seems the waves decay over time and converges to zero with the default spectrum parameters. Specifically, Freq. Ratio 1.1 results in waves disappearing over time but with freq. ratio of 1.15 (while keeping everything else constant) I get Hm0 values of 150meters.

Obviously, I am missing something. I have attached my files, I hope someone can shed some light into this and point me in the right direction.

Cheers

Hi,

I wasn't able to open your slf file to see the extent of your model. However, I would suggest keeping WAVE GROWTH LIMITER value to default (1) or even omit that then try running the simulation.

cheers,

NZ

Hi NZrigat,

thanks for looking into it. I can open the geo slf file fine using BlueKenue (see attached).

I had attached a simple cas file there. I tried WAVE GROWTH LIMITER 0-1-2. I wasn't able to change the results with anything I tried.
Even tried to compile with different gnu flags to see if it's a compilation issue.

Anyway, I hope more people can look at it and help me debug this.
cheers

Hello,

I ran your files with V8P3r1 and WAVE GROWTH LIMITER = 1 and got increasing wave heights during 36hrs. See image file attached. I didn't use parallel processors.

Good luck,

Patrick

hi PMV - thanks for testing it. So this means I have an issue with the v8p2 if you used my cas/slf files. I will compile v8p3r1 and report back.

or with your parallel version, I commented the following line:
/PARALLEL PROCESSORS = 24

Hi PMV,

tested with v8p1 build but compiled with less aggressive GNU flags. Ran it with 24 cores again with wave growth limiter = 1

I am getting similar wave heights (max ~7.2m). I am expecting about 0.6-0.7m max wave height given the wind speed (5m/s) and the fetches.
Nevertheless, at least I am getting waves that are not decaying to zero!

Just taking a guess, but I think whitecapping is turned off by default. I would suggest trying to enable it to see if it limits your wave growth.
