Extreme Hm0 along the coast 12 years 8 months ago #3950

Hi

I have created a roughly square domain with three forced boundaries and one free boundary which corresponds to the beach. I'm forcing each boundary point with the same value of HM0L, FPICL, TETA1L, SPRE1L which changes at every 5 minute time step. The waves look sensible within the domain but along the free coastal boundary I have several nodes with extremely high Hm0 for example 200m. Has anyone else experienced this problem or have any ideas what might be causing it? Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Fay

Hello,

to answer your question, I should have a look at your model.
But before that, you can already check/answer the following points:
  • Be sure that you are using dissipation terms to take into account the bottom-induced wave breaking and the bottom friction

  • You can run your model with constant boundary conditions (i.e. without imposing a time-dependent boundary conditions) : if you get reasonable results, that means that the problem is in the reading of the formatted file you use to impose time-varying boundary conditions, and in setting in LIMWAC.f the spectral parameters.

  • You mentioned values of Hm0 of 200m: do you get those values just on some nodes, or over the whole of the coastal boundary ?

  • What are the mesh size along the coastal boundary, the peak period of the incident spectrum and the time step you impose to solve the model ?

Kind regards,

Giovanni

Thanks for your message Giovanni, I have now managed to obtain realistic wave heights by reducing the time step to 1 second.

Hi
I have this problem too. Hm0 extreme values over breaking depth.
I Attach my file. What is wrong?
Thanks
