Why ZERO vertical velocity from T3D results? 6 years 6 months ago #29981

Hi all,

I'm trying to simulate saltwater intrusion with T3D(v7 version) model (cas file attached below).

When I looked into the vertical profile, stratification was not reproduced(figure below). Then I want to have a look at the vertical velocity field to confirm if there is strong mixing vertically, but found all data from W output is zero.

Now I'm totally confused about the results (I assume W will not be that large, but not zero! at the same time, U and V have differences among layers), it seems that 3D model executed like layered 2D models.

May it be the problem of settings with turbulence models or coefficient of diffusion?
Or any suggestion about the possible reasons? Thanks a lot!

Best regards,

Viola

Hi

I think you should add:
DENSITY LAW = 2 or 3
in your steering file otherwise the hydrodynamic computation is made without the effect of salinity and temperature
In your case the tracer are all considered as passive...

Hi ,
Some updates about my question.
After adding the keyword DENSITY LOW : 2, and I also made modification of the turbulence model:
DENSITY LAW : 2
HORIZONTAL TURBULENCE MODEL : 3
VERTICAL TURBULENCE MODEL :3
COEFFICIENT FOR HORIZONTAL DIFFUSION OF VELOCITIES : 1.E-6
COEFFICIENT FOR VERTICAL DIFFUSION OF VELOCITIES : 1.E-6

The results becomes better(attached figure below), but still the vertical velocity W=0, which I can't figure out the reason.

I wonder if it is the similar case (W=0) in anybody's 3D simulation? May somebody share a cas file for reference? Thanks.

Best,

Viola

Hi,

Is it normal that the X and Z scales are not the same on the W plot than on the other ones?

Cheers,

Hi,

Thank you for reminding that.
The arrays of W were checked to have value of NaN, which did not produce the plot.
More tests would be done to double check.

Best,

Viola
