TOPIC: Vertical configuration in deep-to-shallow domain

Vertical configuration in deep-to-shallow domain 4 years 5 months ago #36050

Hi

My domain goes from deep ocean (4000m) to island atols.
It runs fine in 2D but quickly runs unstable (at atols) in 3D with thermocline forced.
I'm using equally distributed sigma layers (tried 10 to 30 layers).

Any suggestions of the best vertical mesh configuration to handle intertidal zones?

Thanks very much

Hi
Your fortran file indicate a telemac version which is 20 years old!
So first of all, before asking for assistance, update you model to the latest available version and join the new file.
It's one of the "rules" of the forum...
Sometimes boring but we can't have all telemac version installed on our computer to test your case and it's not our job to update your files to allow the case to run in the latest version...

Hi

Thanks, I have now updated to V7p3r1, with the cas and run files attached.
The model still runs unstable.
Any help very much appreciated.
I'm not really sure the best way to treat the tidal flats and the distribution of vertical layers.

Thanks!

The latest version is v8p1r1...
About the vertical distribution, sigma layer isn't probably the best choice...
You mentionned a thermocline so there is probably a huge interest to have a fixed plane near the thermocline lever and some refinement arround...

Hello,

Christophe is right, you must use the latest release before asking for help because some bugs may have been solved + new features may improve the results between releases and we do not waste time for old releases.

Christophe is also right if you know if a thermocline exists, you should refine your vertical mesh around it with a Z-layer distribution (or an hybrid transformation sigma-Z). But you will have to implement your distribution in the USER_MESH_TRANSF subroutine (in release 8.1).

You can try to use MESH TRANSFORMATION = 2 or 5, but not sure it will give better results.

Please read the TELEMAC-3D user manual for release 8.1 to see what to do for the mesh transformation:
wiki.opentelemac.org/doku.php?id=documentation_v8p1r1

Hope this helps,

Chi-Tuan
