Hello all,
I have noticed an increased wind effect when running Telemac3D coupled in TOMAWACT3D mode. The main driving force of the model are wave-driven currents. I run some tests in plain TOMAWAC/TOMAWACt3D mode, with/without wind to illustrate the problem:
1.TOMAWAC coupling WITHOUT wind.

2.TOMAWAC coupling WITH wind.

3.TOMAWACT3D coupling WITHOUT wind.

4.TOMAWACT3D coupling WITH wind.

As you can see, case 4 deviates a lot. These are depth averaged results, but checking the intermediate layers (5 in total) does not show a different picture.
Here is the steering file for case 4:

File Attachment:

File Name: t3d_offshore_8_S_1.0_2.0_0.0_year1.cas
File Size: 8 KB

Is this a 'bug' or a by-product of the underlying theory?

Costas

Hello Costas,

It is normal that there are differences, in that coupling we calculate energy transfert between waves and wind, (see for example windiss1.f).

Now i don't know to what point it should be different in your case.

But as always, it doesn't exclude that there is a bug too.

hope it helps

Thierry

Hello Thierry,
Re-visiting the topic, I must clarify that wind is left always enabled in TOMAWAC and testing its contribution by enabling/disabling it in the TELEMAC2D/3D steering file. If I understand correctly, enabling it in TOMAWAC, enables only wave generation within the model. Additionally, if wind is enabled in the hydrodynamic model it adds surface stress.
The question is why TELEMACT3D coupling suddenly enhances wind's contribution. I would understand a change in pattern, like it is observed in plain TOMAWAC coupling, but such a difference is puzzling. :S
I wonder if the model from the Teles et al paper is available to test.
Best Regards,
Costas
