My personal favourite is to convert the *.slf result file to a binary *.vtk file, like this:

sel2vtk_bin.py -i mymesh.slf -o mymesh.vtk

Binary *.vtk files load much quicker than the ascii files, and they are much smaller. This is especially useful when dealing with large models.

Just my $0.02.

Hi,

Been using sel2vtk_bin.py for quite some time, flawless in most of the cases.

Thank you!

Hi,

Is there any way to convert *.slf to *.vtk as one file instead of separate files for each timestep? My simulation period is 3 days and the timestep is 0.3 seconds. If it converts each timestep to a file, I will end up with tens or hundreds of thousands of files.

Thanks

Hello,

If you have an output file that has that many time steps, then perhaps you should use some of my other tools instead to scan, probe, extract cross sections/transects, and/or time series at an individual locations. That is what I would do.

Using a terminal is more suited for this than converting it all to *.vtk.

Of course, you can always restrict which time steps get converted to *.vtk by specifying start and end time steps for the files that get converted.

Hope it helps,

Pat

Hi Pat,

Thanks for the reply. It's helpful.

But in my case, I need to see the animation of the whole domain for the entire simulation period.

I'm using currently bluekenue for that, but I wanted to use ParaView as it has better visualization capabilities, and the graphics looks nicer.

I've tried the telemac plugin for paraview and Salome-Hydro. Both work fine. They are a bit slow compared with running *.vtk, but they do the job for now.

Thanks,

Mohammed

Hello,

Sorry for the late reply. Were you able to get the problem fixed? If not, please attach the *.slf file that you are trying to use with sel2vtk_bin.py, and I can take a look. I have a suspicion that the *.slf file you are trying to use is corrupt.

Hello Luiz,

The sel2vtk.py and sel2vtk_bin.py scripts need to have the ppmodules directory in the same folder. I am suspecting that you moved an individual script out of the PPUTILS directory, and attempted to use it. You can not do that unless, of course, you deal with all the dependencies somehow.

If this is not what you did, please explain further, and we'll debug.
