The problem was solved by making a fresh installations/compilations of mpich2 and metis and recompiled libmetis.a and telemac against the new libraries.
Mpich2 has two alternative process managers - mpd or hydra and hydra is the default.
I can not get telemac to run in parallel using hydra - however it will run with mpd as the process manager. It is necessary to start an mpi with mpdboot which hydra does not need.
I have included ~/mpd.hosts file and ~/.mpd.conf as well as mpi_telemac.conf in the working directory.
Thanks for your help with this.

We are happy to this working. You should indeed install mpi first, then compile METIS and then compile the TELEMAC system ... as it explain in the installation notes on this website.
Please note that we found the openMPI implementation of MPI2 more generic than MPICH2, in that it installs more easily on more Linux flavour than the MPICH2.
Glad to have helped.
Sébastien.
