TOPIC: TPXO local data

TPXO local data 5 years 8 months ago #33228

Hello!
I am trying to simulate the tide using TPXO. I thought using TPXO local will be better. So I got the data from volkov.oce.orst.edu/tides/EC.html
The model is not producing the tide using the files downloaded from the website. I attached the BC file, steering file, and Geo file. could anyone help me find out why that could happen?

Hi,

The model is not producing the tide using the files downloaded from the website.
Can you provide more details about your issue please? log of model execution, images of your domain and results...

Regards,
Laurent

YES, SURE!
Please see the attached.
When I used TPXO global, the model worked well. But I wanted to use TPXO regional to better fit the measured data.

Can you rename the log file in txt file and post it again please?

If the global database works fine, there is no reason that the local database does not work.
By looking at your mesh, it seems that your boundary with prescribed tide is too close to your are of interest. Maybe you should place it in far enough, outside of the estuary, in open sea where TPXO data are available. Then you'll be able to well propagate tidal signal in your domain.

Laurent

Certainly. See the attached file.
I wanted to use the local TPXO so I do not have to extend the domain. I will try to do that if this problem is not solved.
Thank you so much

There is no error in this log...
You should look at the log files of the other processors to see an explicit error message, or try to run your model in sequential mode.

Thank you for that. The model runs without error. The issue is it seems that the tidal force at the boundary is not represented (the discharge value is so little). Maybe expanding the domain will solve the problem.
I have another quick question, please!
Can I adjust the tidal range with time? like changing the CTIDE value in one of the subroutines? how can I do that?

You can plot the TPXO grid (without land points with missing values) superimposed with your model grid to see how far your boundary is from the TPXO valid data. And I think you'll see that your model extend is too small.

You can look at the surface elevation results on boundary nodes where you prescribe tidal elevation. If the values are too low, it means that the model interpolates tidal signals from the TPXO database but located too far from your boundary. And it'll confirm that a solution is to extend your model domain.

In a general way, and location of your maritime boundary aside, the propagation of the tidal wave requires a relatively large domain to well represent it, so as the model can resolve the non-linear interactions between tidal constituents especially inside estuary where the tidal wave can change significantly. And it's your case I think. Don't forget to check your results with measurements if you can!

Once it'll be done, your model results should be better. You can play with CTIDE if necessary, but a constant value in time should be enough.

Laurent
