Hi all,

Is there such a thing as a MASCARET tutorial? I'm looking into learning MASCARET as an alternative to HEC-RAS, but I don't quite understand how it works as a whole, since it seems to rely on different files and nomenclature than the rest of TELEMAC. I suppose I could simply look at the provided examples, but those won't necessarily give me the best idea of how to put together my own case from scratch.

Thanks!

Hi, there,
there was a guide to fudaa-mascaret written by CETMEF, but it's out of date and only in French (www.cerema.fr/fr/centre-ressources/boutique/guide-prise-main-fudaa-mascaret-30]Fudaa mascaret tutoriel),
It's probably best to use the QGIS plug-in (QGis tutoriel)

Hi Andre,

For sure, you should use the QGIS plug-in.
It will be much easier if you're french reader as the wiki is only written in french.

Anyway, follow the procedure step by step :

- extremities and branchs... easy to do but need to be acchieved with care as your linear referencing will be based on it

- importation of topograhic information, creation of Cross-section and building of it combining data extracted from DEM and topo... maybe the more difficult stage as you need to understand the "ergonomy" of the plugin and the "role" of different layers

- singularities

- don't let yourself be disturbed by the plugin "philosophy" influenced by the original developer and the user community (I'm a member)... french river flood forecast services (vigicrue).
For that reason, the plugin has many feature to work in event mode... and consequently, the plugin is not straightforward in a more classical use.

- If you want to do mapping, you can export and use cartoZI
http://wikhydro.developpement-durable.gouv.fr/index.php/CartoZI#Mise_.C3.A0_disposition

It would be great to see new users adopting (at least trying) Mascaret and the plugin.

Are there plans to not use PostgreSQL and associated plugins in the future? I assume this ties into what you said earlier about the plugin philosophy, but this seems convoluted when QGIS is already supposed to be the data source. It's excellent that this plugin has been made available and not kept proprietary, but I personally can't see myself using it if it requires this many layers of additional software (my company has a strict policy in this regard), and probably others are thinking the same. I can only imagine that it's not within the resources of Artelia to develop a simplified version for "classical use" as you have put it? Please don't take this as an angry review, that's not my intention, but rather a feedback saying "I want to, but can't, use this in its current form".

All that said, is there something I'm simply not aware of in the MASCARET workflow that requires the use of PostgreSQL etc.? Or is this just a particularity of Artelia?

Kind regards,
André Renault

Hi
Just to precise some points, this is not an Artelia choice to use PostgreSQL. The first draft of the plugin was designed with Postgre and then when it mas decided to officialise the plugin, there was no decision to change the initial work done...
In fact, the use of a database is not mandatory for Mascaret itself but this was the solution adopted to store all the model configuration, results and properties...
It was already asked to envisage the use of SQLite instead of PostgreSQL but this change as a cost... Moreover, is this possibility could be a solution for you and your company?
If so are you able to fund this works?

Christophe

Bonjour Christophe,

Thank you for the clarifications, it now makes more sense why SQL is used. I was thinking the plugin would follow the Blue Kenue model of file generation and visualization, where it is purely a pre/post-processor.

As we typically use HEC-RAS 1D (often this is what clients request), my company is unlikely to seriously pursue MASCARET and I was merely thinking of experimenting with it on my own time for the time being. However, we do use TELEMAC-2D with some frequency, so maybe someday we could think of MASCARET, if it is as easy to use as HEC-RAS. For all its flaws, RAS is relatively user-friendly...

Kind regards,
André Renault

Bonjour Renaud,

To complete my previous answer, you could also notice that Mascaret is also partly based on River-Gis which is a QGIS plugin designed to manage HEC-RAS model...
I don't have any opinion on "relatively user-friendly" for RAS.

Just to know, is a SQLite solution rather than postgreSQL could be an option for your company?

Christophe

Bonjour Christophe,

For SQLite vs PostgreSQL, I honestly have no idea what would be best for my company. If we were to start using QGIS MASCARET, we could probably install PostgreSQL.

Kind regards,
André Renault
