Hi,

I am a bit confused about few parameters in the dyke breach file as mentioned in the Telemac2D manual:

1) "Bandwidth of the polyline defining the breach"--What exactly is meant by this?

2) "Width of Polygon defining the breaches"-- How it is different from 1

3) Control level of breach (breach exist if water level exceed this value)

4) Water level initiating the breaching process

Point 4 is easy to understand but not sure what is the purpose of Point 3

5) Number (global mesh) of the point controlling the breaching--Under which condition it is appropriate to use this?

6) Number of points on the dike axis where the breach will appear-- Not sure how to define the dyke axis, is it that polyline we are supposed to define?

And finally, a general question: Is it necessary to provide the comments starting with '#'sign to make T2D understand the purpose of the numerical value in the line below the comment? What if I only provide the values without the comments?

Will the software understand which value is for what purpose based on the line number in the file where they appear?

Hope some explanation about these parameters will help the wider user community.

Cheers,

Hi Joy,
you might be right that the first two mean the same and should be perhaps defined only once in the manual. Attached you find an example of modified breach file.
'Width of polygon defining breach' gives basically the dike width.
Note that in the text you find in the manual, three different breaches with different breach initiation methods are defined.
3)"Control level of breach" is used when "Option for the breaching process" is 2. And 4)"Water level initiating the breaching process" is used when "Option for the breaching process" is 3. 5) Number (global mesh) of the point controlling the breaching--is used when "Option for the breaching process" is 3.
The comment lines might be expected by the program. What is written after the '#' may not be important.
I hope this helps!

Many thanks for your reply. It was immensely helpful.

Just want to double check a few points: By "width of the breaching dike"you meant the thickness of the dyke NOT the length,

Assuming there is one breach, if I prepare the file as:
#
3
#
#
25.0
#
2
#
0.0
#
2
#
5.9
#
7.2
#
4
#
2000.0 37.5
2041.0 37.5
2082.0 37.5
2100.0 37.5
Do you think Telemac will read it? For that matter, for the model breach file if I remove all charaters except the '#'signs will it work?

Actually, I am planning to create numerous scenarios of dyke breaches, it will be easy to create breach files an automated fashion if only # and numerical values could be used.

Hi
Yes probably this file will works...
If you want to check or modify the format of this file you could adapt the subroutine lecbreach.f.
Here you can suppress the comment line for example...

Christophe

yes, width means thickness!
The second line gives the number of breaches, which equals 3 here. But breach parameters only for one breach are defined, so telemac will still give error message. The following should work..
#
1
#
#
25
