How different can be the results when using wave equation? 6 years 1 week ago #32006

Hi,

I've been using (or trying to use!) TELEMAC for the last month. It's my bad that I have a project to complete within a short time and I decided to use TELEMAC2D for the first time, for this project.

I didn't want to use the wave equation because I've not read about it and I preferred to solve the original SWE. However, it's been SO COMPLICATED and SO UNSTABLE, that I'm considering to use the wave equation, as I've realized that it's more stable. It's such a pitty that the schemes for solving the complete SWE are so unstable!

But now my concern is if the wave equation can be considered accurate enough as it would be to solve the SWE with a correct and stable scheme? My case is a coastal lagoon influenced by a river and tide, and my main objective is to see how the salinity transport varies in time. Just by looking in the forum, I came across to this post:

www.opentelemac.org/index.php/assistance...tion-based-algorithm

In conclusion, the member of that post says that the wave equation solved with the default TELEMAC options, might not represent the same physics involved in the SWE.

So I'd like to know, when don't you recommend to use the wave equation in TELEMAC2D? Could I use it for my problem and expect acceptable results? In terms of physics, what does change in the solution when choosing either SWE or the wave equation?

Best,
JR
