TPXO in Telemac v8p2r0 - partioning issue in parallel computing 3 years 7 months ago #38339

I have been doing simulations of tidal propagation in a large gulf/estuary on TELEMAC 2D v8p0r0 succesfully. When switching to 8p2r0, I ran into issues when running in parallel on a supercomputer. I noticed that in the temporary files, the TPXO files were copied as many times as the number of processors. My guess is that it is a partioning issue. All processors try to upload their TPXO files and so, very quickly I run into memory issues.

Is there a solution? Can I request Telemac not to copy the TPXO files and read them directly from the original files?

Thank you in advance!
Kind regards,
Ignace

Hello Ignace,

I think you would have the same issue if running simulations with older releases of TELEMAC-2D (down to v6p2 when this feature to compute boundary conditions with OSU tidal solutions like TPXO was introduced).
If I remember, it was due to Windows (other people told us, I do not run TELEMAC on Windows) and each processor had to deal with its own file.

Anyway, you can try to change the telemac2d.dico file with SCAL rather than PARAL with the SUBMIT attribute of the 2 keywords BINARY DATABASE 1 FOR TIDE and BINARY DATABASE 2 FOR TIDE, e.g. for the 1st one change:
SUBMIT = 'NBB1-READ;T2DBB1;FACUL;BIN;LIT;PARAL'
to
SUBMIT = 'NBB1-READ;T2DBB1;FACUL;BIN;LIT;SCAL'

Hope this helps,

Chi-Tuan
