You are right, we now tend to use conservative schemes for tracers, but I still like the method of characteristics for the advection of velocity, for its unconditional stability, monotonicity and the fact that there is very little numerical diffusion when you use large time steps. There is a variant called "weak formulation of the method of characteristics" which is mass-conservative and has wonderful properties, but there is a technical problem of integration which requires advection of Gauss points. It is known in the USA as ELLAM, but originates from LNHE in France. We did not implement it yet in Telemac.
