Hi

I was planning on creating a HARMONIC CONSTANTS FILE containing harmonic constants at my boundary nodes from 2 TPXO datasets but now I have looked more closely at the model it appears that the HARMONIC CONSTANTS FILE is not a valid option for TIDAL DATA BASE = 2 (i.e. TPXO). These are the options as I understand it:

TIDAL DATA BASE = 1 (JMJ)

You can give a HARMONIC CONSTANTS FILE or the boundary conditions can be generated from a database.

TIDAL DATA BASE = 2 (TPXO)

The harmonic constants are extracted from binary databases.

TIDAL DATA BASE = 3 (LEGOS-NEA)

A HARMONIC CONSTANTS FILE is required.

Is this correct or is it possible to use tidal constituents from more than 1 TPXO dataset?

Thanks

Fay

Hi Fay,

I am not sure to have fully understood your question. Anyway, I try to answer you.
With the tidal solutions coming from OSU (TPXO like), in version 6.2, you do not need any HARMONIC CONSTANTS FILE, which is a means to save memory (in particular LEGOS-NEA harmonic constants file are very huge) because you do not need to store every original constants files and this means was not thought for version 6.2.

Can you explain what you mean with "from [2/more than 1] TPXO dataset(s)" ? Do you want to mix the tidal constituents that may lack, or because the extent of your model belongs to 2 different tidal solutions?

Hi Chi-Taun

Thank you for trying to answer my question. I would like to know how to use tidal constituents from 2 TPXO datasets; for example using all the european shelf constituents plus some extra constituents from the global solution (which are not included in the european shelf dataset).

Regards

Fay

Hi Fay,

With the version 6.2, you cannot do what you want without implementing it. The TPXO module mostly contains the subroutines coming from OSU. Anyway, as the tidal solutions must have been validated on their own extent, I am not sure that it would be consistent to mix constituents coming from different solutions.

Indeed, if you could have generated an external harmonic constants file, you would be able to try it, but in version 6.2 (and the next one), it is not possible with the tidal solutions coming from OSU.
