Hey all
I wanted to know if telemac can aid in locating the breached sites in river flood modelling. Can the cause of breaching (like piping or overflow) be analyzed using the software?

Hello,

I know of a few applications where the breaching process due to an overflow has been done. This implies a coupling between Telemac-2D or 3D and Sisyphe with bed-load. You can see the formation of the breach, though it obviously greatly depends on the sediment properties that you give. The formation of a breach by piping cannot be done.

Hello

As an additional answer to Jean Michel reply:
- if you want only to detect the breach location, an hydrodynamic simulation is sufficient to see where there are overflows on your dykes.
- To estimate flowrates through the breaches as well as solid dicharges you need to use a Telemac2d-sisyphe coupling.
- in telemac2d there are several (3) pre-implemented scenarios of breaching which you can use as a preliminary tool. Please refer to the user manual to see technical details and the way of use of these features.

with my best regards

Riadh

I only need the justify the reason for breach (piping or over toppling).
Can that be assessed from mere simulation or i need to use Telemac2d-sisyphe coupling?

Thank you for suggestion.

Hello,

with Telemac and / or Sisyphe you cannot assess the type of breaching, overtopping or piping.
If you want to do a dam breach analysis you have to decide a priori what type is the failure mechanism, independently of the model (parameteric, empirical or physical based) you use.

The "americans" as ususal have excellent and freely available guide lines for dam breach analysis, e.g. this one:
water.state.co.us/DWRIPub/Documents/Guid...amBreachAnalysis.pdf
