Hello,

I would like to model a dam with T2D. Which is the best way to do this ?
At the moment, I just represented the dam with the topography and a good resolution mesh (see picture in attachment).

Is it better to use a weir ? What are the differences ?

Regards

Hello,

It depends on what you plan to do with the model. If the dam does not break it is probably better to represent it as an island. The flow through the dam can be represented by a culvert. What you did can also work but however with steep dry bottom slopes which may cause local problems (and what about the flow through the dam ?). If it is for a dam-break it is different, then you can inspire from test case Malpasset.

Thanks for the answer !

The goal is to model flood over the dam. There is no flow that through the dam because all the culvert are considered obstructed (it is a small dam).

Hello,

So modelling the dam as the bottom topography is the right way. Just remember that when the water falls down from the dam, you are no longer in Saint-Venant assumptions...
