TOPIC: Too quick variations between wave directions and loss of energy

Hi!

I have a problem with a simulation with a TOMAWAC model run with boundary waves varying in time and wind varying with time. The energy seems to be lost too quickly (compared with the boundary data and theory) which results in a very fast varying wave field. It seems to be a result of quickly varying wave directions. I am now running a test with more wave directions in the model (90 instead of 45) but could it be another parameter that is the problem? I have also tested to have non-linear transfer between frequencies enabled but this did not have any effect on the result.

I have attached my cas-file.

I am very thankful for help on this.

Best regards,
Charlotta

Hello Charlotta,

Can you attach your fortran file and wave conditions file?

I have made a similar LIMWAC subroutine to read from a file quite like yours. It can address a continued computation and interpolates between entries in the wave file. It also prints more information during execution to monitor how it reads and interpolates. Adapt it to your needs and see if it helps you troubleshoot.

I haven't used it for some time, so it is not compatible with v7. But it works with v6p3.

It seems like the model do not represent the incoming wave directions from the boundary correctly.

Can you be more specific and/or illustrate the problem? Did you use the subroutine I gave you? Also try to post the listing output (append '>output.txt' at the end of you command line).

I have just started a simulation with the f-file you sent, it seems to work with v7 as well.

In the attached picture the green line is the boundary input, the blue line is the model result at the boundary, and the grey line is model result in the middle of the model domain.

Thanks for all the help,
Charlotta

It would help to add timescale to your results to correlate with the wave file. If you want to slow-start the computation, copy FP and DIR from the second line in your wave file to the first like this:
NO_TIME_POINTS
249
###
AT	HMO	FP	DIR
0	0.00	0.14	36.87
10800	1.60	0.14	36.87
...
Otherwise the direction would slowly go from 180 to 36.87. Do you need that? The same applies to Hm0 if you like. Also avoid setting FP to 0!
Your maximum discretised FP is ~0.3. In your wave file, FP goes up to 1.1!. Your should rethink your frequency spectrum discretisation, maybe increase MINIMAL FREQUENCY?
Also, do you have time varying wind forcing that may influence the results?
