Dear Users,

I am a new user and please forgive me for luck of experience, but I wold like to ask a general question on TELEMAC applications. My area of research is Greenland fjord. I was wondering how suitable this software to the Arctic, North Atlantic small coastal regions, i.e. fjord: to take in consideration strong stratification, density, strong winds, plume discharges, sea-ice cover etc. The depth of the fjord is 900m , lenght 100km and width 8km. I wonder if anyone who uses it for Arctic/North Atlantic areas research and could give me some advise and if there are any difficulties to apply the software to the field as I have not seen any papers on Telemac Greenland fjord (maybe Norwegian, Alaska fjords) applications. I have been reading manuals but it is still not clear to me if it works for north fjords, even model itself is brilliant and offers a lot. I have read that new release will include sea-ice formation but I have not heard more yet. Thank in advance.

Kind Regards!

Hello Violeta,

All what you mention is possible but the ice cover. I have not heard of any development on the way, though this feature is asked from time to time. Basically it would not be very difficult to program a kind of friction due to ice on the free surface. However there would be problems if we have to turn to internal flows in case of a thick ice cover. There was some publications on this topic made by HydroQuébec, and maybe engineers or former engineers from Canadian Hydraulic Center will have some extra hints...

With best regards,

As Jean-Michel said, ice modelling is not yet in TELEMAC. I have been contemplating the idea of adding an ice module to the TELEMAC system for some time, since my years at Canadian Hydraulics Centre and carrying now at HR Wallingford -- I would be opened for suggestions and collaboration, even though it may take a while before a go ahead.

In my view, those who have been doing it for some time are:
- Shen, Hung T., Clarkson Univeristy (Potsdam, NY) oai.dtic.mil/oai/oai?verb=getRecord&meta...identifier=ADA266847
- Faye Hicks, University of Alberta (Edmonton) riverice.ca/

Hope this helps nonetheless,
Sébastien.

Dear Jean-Michel Hervouet and Sébastien,

Thank you very much for your reply with useful suggestions and links. Is it possible to embed any ice model into Telemac? I hope yes. I am not sure yet on which process in fjord I will have to focus more in my research but hopefully Telemac will be the one to use as it has such a fantastic technical support and other advantages! Thank you.

Kind Regards!

Hello,

Of course you can think of embedding an ice model in Telemac, this is exactly what we expect of open source, and maybe other users are interested.

Best regards,
