Hello, could someone please confirm the wave direction convention used in the artemis input and also in the output result files (wave incidence), am I correct in thinking for waves going in the direction of...


Direction Input Output

North 90 90
East 0 0
South 270 -90
West 180 -180/+180

Hi Oliver,

I had this problem as well. Have a look at this previous post of mine.

Applying the trigonometrical convention, the angle for waves propagating towards the:
  • North is 90
  • East is 0
  • South is 270
  • West is 180

This convention is kept the same for the presentation of results. Keep in mind that you may have reflections within your model that might cause a change in wave incidence.

Hi Costas,

Thanks for confirming my thoughts. The values of wave incidence in
my output file range from -180 to +180, across a fairly large domain where reflection is only important in a small region, so I am wondering if the wave incidence values are due to wave reflection.

Hi,

In my experience, Artemis could get a bit tricky in larger domains because it gets difficult to define boundary reflections accurately. If it is a small area that reflections are important, you could split your model area between Tomawac and Artemis, so that Tomawac handles propagation and Artemis reflection.

Ok, thanks for your advice. I have created various domain sizes, with incident wave type (1) for liquid boundary nodes so that waves enter and exit freely. There a various reflecting objects extending from the coast. My largest domain is 1600m x 800m to try to determine the effects of wave reflection, diffraction, refraction on the surrounding coast. I'm not sure I'll be able to do this by combining Artemis and Tomawac.
