I just stumbled upon the fact that MDAL (www.mdal.xyz/) now supports mesh-files in serafin format. Maybe that is old news, it seems to have been updated in may?

Anyways, as far as I understand, this would allow post-processing in QGIS with Crayfish?

Does anyone have experience with this in QGIS 3.x?

Yes, since QGIS 3.4(.3?) you could directly open Telemac result
And display vectors and scalar directly.
Crayfish just allow you to make a video

Does it require any additional installations than just OsGEO4w and QGIS?

When I try to load a serafin-mesh, QGIS won't accept the format. Does it require any specified file-suffix other than i.e. .slf?

Which version of qgis did you use?
Maybe the name should be *.slf
It works for me on Qgis 3.10.0
