Hello forum!

I have a quick question which I hope have an easy solution  .

I am running a T3D-Tomwac. My wind- and wave-indata files cover a whole year (the wind-file is a 2D-result file). I would like to run the simulation for one month only. My wave file is easy to edit to extract the boundary waves for the corresponding month, but since the wind is a 2D-result file this seems more problematic.

Is there keyword which can allow me to start the simulation at a specific time step of the indata-files? I'm looking for something like:

START SIMULATION AT INDATA FILE TIMESTEP = XXXXX.

I could not find anything in the .dico. Any clues? Thank you in advance.

Hello,

The keyword you are after is: DATE OF COMPUTATION BEGINNING
Explanation is extracted with FUDAA prepro but should be available at the dico:
Type: Real
Level: Advanced
Gives the date of the computation beginning. The format
is yyyymmddhhmm,
as an exemple 199310241524 means the 24 october 93
at 15h24. This date gives a reference for reading the
wind file.
**Related keywords:**
BINARY WIND FILE
FORMATTED WIND FILE
WIND FILE BINARY
WIND FILE FORMAT

Forgot to mention that this applies to TOMAWAC only. Are you applying wind to Telemac3D as well?

Thank you Costas!

Does this require my input data to have a specific time row?

At the moment my input data files looks something like:

0 1.30 0.17 17.61
10800 1.60 0.14 36.87
21600 1.92 0.13 43.57
32400 2.12 0.13 44.69

I guess the time step should be in some kind of date form, right?

At the moment I'm running tomawac independently. Is there a workaround otherwise, can i extract a time series of frames from a post processor? I tried with "Extract Surface - Temporal Range', but that does not extract a time series.

Hello schmirre,

I am a bit confused. I thought wind was a 2D Selafin file with dates stored. I don't think this keyword will work with ASCII files.

If you have ASCII wind file, it would be a piece of cake to tailor it to the desired duration.

If you have a 2D selafin file, then you can use the keyword I mentioned OR (it just popped in my mind):
  1. Open wind data SLF in BlueKenue.
  2. Go to Tools -> Calculator
  3. Choose variable in A and then choose Start and End at the right to extract the period you are interested in
  4. Put A in 'Expression' and fill the rest as appropriate
  5. Don't use beta releases of BK because they have a bug in the Calculator :(

Sorry for the confusion!

Yes the wind is a 2D slf with dates stores. But, the wave input file on the other hand is in ASCII-format.

I was thinking about Calculator also, but that don't allow me to extract vectors, right? I can choose either magnitude or direction?

BK combines vectors in one XY result, but you can use Calculator to convert back to constituents (while splitting) using SIN(A) and COS(A) functions in the expression. There is also an option to chose the X or Y value at the drop down menu next to the Start/End fields. That could work too (I have never used it)...

Hi Guys,

The X and Y options on the drop down give the node coordinates.
Use the U and V options to extract the original components from a vector object.

Cheers... Martin
